In 2018 we took part of our leadership training down to Rock Hill, South Carolina. As part of our leadership training, the 2018 Mission Conference met at Canaan Campground. Like all our conferences, this weekend was intentionally centered around how to grow the community in spirit and holistic healing.
Firstly, we had three teachers who led us. They led workshops in permaculture and ministry and how they go together. This team of leaders included one of our co-founders, Jason Lindsay, who leads Farm Education for Soil & Souls.
Secondly, we had members from the community and local churches, join us for the weekend. On the first night, we always have an open community reception. This is a time for community members and future leaders to join in the Soil & Souls experience. Leaders and other supporters joined to learn about ways to serve and heal the community. The leaders who attended participated in workshops. For folks interested in a career focusing on caring for the environment, we offered a “Green Jobs Fair”. Lastly, the weekend ended with a demonstration of installing and dedicating a community medicinal garden. Once again, this is an opportunity for all community members to experience the healing nature of Soil & Souls.
Finally, we owe a big “Thank you” to the people and organizations that helped us with this weekend. Supported by the Omega Tau Omega chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the Come to the Table program led by the Rural Advancement Foundation International (RAFI), and Green the Church, we had a successful conference. The support from organizations like these are what make Soil & Souls and it’s mission possible.
